The past year has given all of us a chance to reflect & regroup and Fort Knox Five has taken this time to cook up a fresh new slice of retro-soul tinged modern funk. On Playin’ With Fire, FK5 have returned to the roots of their sound incorporating hip-hop beats, 70’s horns and a stomping funky swagger. Blending the sweet soul vibe of Dusty Springfield and the rock and roll grit of Janice Joplin, Vancouver based vocalist, Emily Molloy brings her sultry vocals to the track. The result is a strutting, head bobbing groover oozing with summertime vibes.
Coming off a hot streak of remixing other artists, including the chart topping UK Hip-Hop hit with Ali B’s Swing It, FK5 return to writing originals with the vintage soul meets hip hop vibe of Playin’ with Fire featuring the powerhouse rock and blues vocals of Emily Molloy. A collaboration years in the making,
Emily and FK5 crossed paths many times on tour throughout Canada often playing shows in the same cities and, after years of talking about working together, they finally made it happen when they found themselves living in the same city during lockdown. Emily’s dynamic vocals and lyrics were recorded first and inspired Steve and Rob to craft a classic soul funk anthem around them. Typical of FK5, the new track blends live instruments with electronic production chock full of funky guitars, flute, piano, modern synths and even a touch of fender Rhodes.
On Playin’ with Fire, Steve Raskin and Rob Myers were forced to take a different approach to their usual songwriting, having to work remotely during the lockdown, with Steve living in Vancouver and Rob Myers holding it down in their home base of Washington, DC. Welcome to the next chapter of Fort Knox Five, where we see FK5 collaborating from afar and pushing the music forward into new terrain with a nod to the past.
Playin’ with Fire is a modern version of a classic 45 single, with Emily Molloy’s soul meets rock’n’roll voice packing a punch on top of those funky FK5 beats. It’s one of those ear-worm songs that gets stuck in your head and becomes the funky soundtrack of your whole day
